Fleas
Fleas are wingless insects with mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood. Fleas have been associated with humans and other mammals for thousands of years. A bacterium spread by fleas killed 25 million people, more than a quarter of the European population in 14th century Europe. This was known as the “Black Plague”. Fleas attack a wide variety of warm blooded vertebrates but are most common in dogs, cats, humans, chickens, rabbits, squirrels, rats, ferrets and mice.
